OBEDIENCE TRAINING We offer obedience training for dogs of all ages—from puppies as young as 9 weeks of age through adulthood. No dog (human or canine!) is too old to learn new tricks and good behavior. Training consists of: sit and down on command, sit stay and down stay under distractions (such as other dogs, or people approaching, petting and talking to him), heeling (so your dog doesn’t pull you), recall and finish (so he comes when you call him, not just when he feels like it!), and a stand exercise (so your dog stands calmly while you groom him or wipe his muddy feet). We also work to correct problems such as bolting out doors, jumping up on people, licking and mouthing, chewing, digging, barking, getting in the trash, chasing the cat or the kids, and any other problems that you might be having. Dogs learn through repetition and conditioning, and positive and negative reinforcement. As with all of our programs, we utilize a fine balance of praise and correction (90% praise/10% correction). We reward good behavior through play, food reward, and verbal and physical praise. We correct bad behavior (jumping, biting, etc.) through proper leash corrections. In addition, a major portion of this class is directed at you, the dog handler. It is our mission to teach you how to be a fair, but strong, leader for your dog—and how to make it fun for both of you along the way. The end result is a well-mannered dog that is happy and willing to look to you as his leader. If you have the incentive, and if you commit to investing this time in your dog, you will be more than happy with the results. |
